Senator Miguel Zubiri confirmed that President Rodrigo Duterte has asked support from majority bloc senators during an intimate dinner on Wednesday.

Fifteen senators attended the dinner with President Rodrigo Duterte at the Malacañan Palace.

The senators said it was a light intimate dinner while discussing issues on the side.

“Matagal na ako ang rerequest ngayon lang pinagbigyan. There was no agenda no expected output, we get to have a dinner with the President and we got to know him better,” Senator Aquilino Pimentel said.

“It was just a fellowship dinner, socials, nothing official, we did not talk about anything official, the issue of federalism was mention only just in passing merely in passing, just merely fellowship dinner,” Senator Vicente Sotto III said.

Senator Joseph Victor Ejercito who also attended the dinner said they have also discussed the proposed tax reform program.

In addition, the President also mentioned that receiving international intel report against Senator Leila de Lima.

“Inexplain lang niya na mayroon, kumbaga hindi lang trumped up charges, that there is basis on filing those charges kasi intel nga niya ay international intelligence reports,” Senator JV Ejercito said.

De Lima’s camp refused to comment on the issue.

Some senators denied that the dinner was a some sort of loyalty check by the President amid alleged destabilization plot.

But, Senator Miguel Zubiri said the President asked for support, and a chance to do his job.

“Kasi patapos na yung dinner lalabas na si Senator Grace Poe and he stood up gave her a bow and shook her hand. We were also standing up, saying thank you to the President and then he paused he faced us then sabi niya samin bigyan niyo po ako ng pagkakataon na gawi ang aking tungkulin, and I promise we will do our best na sugpuin itong problema ng droga at kahirapan,” Senator Zubiri added.

Minority Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, on the other hand, is not worried over the inmate meeting of senators and the President.

“That’s routine I can imagine being a member of the majority obligado ka pumunta doon pero not necessarily ang impression doon ay parang Duterte allies I dont think so, hindi , the senators remain independent I believe,” he said.

While they are also members of the majority bloc, Senators Gringo Honasan and Panfilo Lacson were not able to attend the said dinner meeting. – Joyce Balancio | UNTV News & Rescue
