President Barack Obama says peas in guacamole not a good idea

A New York Times tweet for a guacamole recipe made with peas has succeeded in sparking a Twitter outcry, with the Republican Party of Texas calling it tantamount to a declaration of war on their state, and even provoking President Barack Obama to weigh in on the discussion.

“Add green peas to your guacamole. Trust us,” read the tweet posted Wednesday.

Eight seemingly harmless words. Maybe it was the cocky tone of voice. The matter-of-fact tone. But the audacious proposal to add peas to a traditional Mexican recipe has managed to whip the Twittersphere up into a frenzy, with critics calling it “gringo nonsense,”; followers threatening to cancel their subscriptions; and Obama diplomatically agreeing with the general consensus that it may just a pea-brained idea.

“respect the nyt, but not buying peas in guac. onion, garlic, hot peppers, classic,” tweeted the President.

In a rare instance of agreement, Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush concurred, tweeting simply, “You don’t put peas in guacamole.”

The Republican Party of Texas, however, had stronger, more bellicose words for the Times, calling it a declaration of war on the Lone Star State.

It’s not the first instance that the "Times" has offended readers with recipe suggestions.

Last fall, as part of their ‘United States of Thanksgiving’ graphic looking at traditional holiday recipes for each state, the publication stoked the wrath of Minnesotans when they attributed a grape salad to their state -- a dish that readers had never even heard of.

The fallout was called a state’s grapes of wrath, and spawned hashtags like #grapegate and #embracethegrape.
