This decree follows a previous presidential order on May 8, which formally relieved Zaluzhnyi from military duty due to health concerns.

On March 9, the Ukrainian newspaper Dzerkalo Tyzhnia reported that Zaluzhnyi had been deemed unfit for military service by a military medical examination commission.

On Feb. 8, Zelenskyy announced Zaluzhnyi's resignation as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, with Commander of the Ground Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, set to succeed him.

The President's announcement came after a week of speculation regarding Zaluzhnyi's resignation and reports of discord with the Commander-in-Chief, a situation that gained attention in November 2023 following two prominent articles published in Time and The Economist, along with subsequent events.

In the period leading up to Zaluzhnyi's resignation, Ukrainian journalists revealed that the general had been offered the position of Ambassador to the UK. However, at that time, he declined the offer in favor of continuing his service in the Ukrainian military.

On March 7, Zelenskyy appointed Zaluzhnyi as Ukraine's ambassador to the United Kingdom.

Kyiv has not had an ambassador to London since the summer of 2023, when Vadym Prystaiko was dismissed from his post.
