Prince Charles has shared a personal message with the public about the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The royal – who contracted the virus last week and has since recovered – chose not only to speak about his experience, but to shine a light on the impact the virus is having on older members of our community.

Speaking from his home on the Balmoral Estate in Scotland, Charles showed his support of the charity Age UK, of which he is a patron.

"Having recently gone through the process of contracting this coronavirus, luckily with relatively mild symptoms, I now find myself on the other side of the illness, but still in no less a state of social distance and general isolation.

"As we are all learning, this is a strange, frustrating and often distressing experience when the presence of family and friends is no longer possible and the normal structures of life are suddenly removed.

"At such an unprecedented and anxious time in all our lives, my wife and I are thinking particularly of all those who have lost their loved ones in such very difficult and abnormal circumstances, and of those having to endure sickness, isolation and loneliness."

Early last week, Charles had developed mild symptoms of the virus and, after testing positive, followed NHS guidelines to self-isolate for seven days.

His wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, is also isolating in Scotland, separately to Charles. The duchess tested negative for the virus and remains in quarantine following advice to separate for 14 days.
