How Princess Anne Almost Broke Royal Protocol at the Qatar State Banquet

Princess Anne might be known as the ultimate royal rule-follower, but sometimes even the most dutiful members of the monarchy can have a lapse in judgement. And King Charles's younger sister is no exception.
On Tuesday, the Princess Royal almost broke royal protocol at Buckingham Palace's state banquet for the Emir of Qatar and his wife, Sheikha Jawaher bint Hamad bin Suhaim Al Thani, at the diplomatic dinner. In a video shared to X, Anne—who wore a cream silk gown with the blue sash of the Order of the Garter and Royal Family Orders for the star-studded occasion—could be seen almost taking a sip of her drink before clinking glasses with the guest of honor while toasting him.

However, she quickly caught her mistake and was able to tap glasses with the Emir of Qatar with a completely full drink. Looking in the other direction, Anne seemingly double-checked no one else was waiting before nodding her head and finally taking a sip.

The near royal mishap came just a few weeks after Princess Anne presented Queen Camilla with an honorary doctorate of literature from the University of London for her dedicated efforts to promote literacy and literature. It was there that Anne gracefully saved Camilla from breaking protocol after the queen invited her to enter the room first.
Sticking with tradition, Anne insisted that Camilla lead the way, with The Daily Express reporting that she "smiled and politely refused," before allowing the queen to go ahead of her given her royal rank as King Charles's wife.
