Princess Anne's 70th birthday has been celebrated with three new official portraits and a promotion by the Army and Royal Air Force.

The Princess Royal, the Queen's second child and only daughter, will take on the role of general and air chief marshal, bringing her ranks in line with her rank in the Royal Navy.

The photographs of Princess Anne - released on her birthday today (Saturday, 15 August) - were taken in late February by John Swannell at her home in Gatcombe Park, Gloucestershire.

Swannell has photographed other senior royals and took the official images of Princess Anne for her 40th, 50th, and 60th birthdays.

Two of the images show the Princess in formal attire, while the third is more casual, encapsulating Anne's love of the outdoors and showcasing Gatcombe Park's impressive grounds.

Anne's son-in-law Mike Tindall, married to her daughter Zara, recently revealed that plans to mark the day have been "scaled back" in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

"We did have plans - it would've been up in Scotland - but obviously with Covid and Aberdeen being locked down a bit, I think everything's been scaled back a little bit," the former England rugby star said on The One Show.

"It's a shame. I'm sure we'll do something as a family to celebrate her 70 amazing years, she's just an incredible woman in terms of how much work she can get through in the year.

"We will be doing something, as yet I don't know whether she knows - so my lips are sealed."

Speaking about Princess Anne's military promotion, which has been approved by the Queen, the Ministry of Defence praised the royal for being "hugely supportive" of the armed forces.

"This promotion on her 70th birthday recognises her invaluable contribution and commitment to the military.

The Princess Royal's birthday was also marked by ITV documentary Anne: The Princess Royal at 70, which was over a year in the making.

Princess Anne is 14th in line to the throne.
