Princess Beatrice, who recently gave royal fans a glimpse into her London flat during a video message recording, has opened up about how being dyslexic impacted on her school days and self-esteem in a candid new interview, as well as her day job outside of royal duties. The video was shared by Made By Dyslexia, a global charity led by successful dyslexics.

"I was very lucky, I got to go to a school that was very nurturing and supportive… [but] I would describe the actual day to day learning side of things – very challenging," said the princess, who is cousin to Prince William and Prince Harry. "I remember we had different coloured books to describe where your reading levels had got to, and I was always on the white books... my best friends were always on the yellow books, or the green books, they were so far ahead."

Beatrice, who was due to marry Edo Mapelli Mozzi this year but had to cancel the wedding owing to coronavirus, then heart-breakingly shares that being dyslexic initially knocked her confidence.

"[I'd think] 'I'm not good enough, I'm not smart enough, why am I not like the others?'," she shared. "Those moments are very defining, I think if I could say to my younger self... 'Do not be defined by those moments that happen to you in that exam or that classroom, because they are lifelong learnings and they build you up to be who you are'."

The princess then discussed how being dyslexic has actually enabled her to thrive in her current workplace, a software company called Afiniti, where she is currently Vice President of Partnerships & Strategy (according to her LinkedIn).

"I'm very lucky I've been able to find a job that relies on my communication skills a lot more than it is me sitting behind a desk. A lot of my colleagues also have dyslexia because we work in a technology company that is always about looking at things differently," she said. "And I think that's one of the strengths we have as dyslexics, looking at things differently."

A big well done to Beatrice for shedding light on such an important topic. (P.S. Did you know she'll get a new title when her and Edo eventually do tie the knot?).
