Princess Eugenie Wore Her Grandma Queen Elizabeth's Brooch as a Hairpiece to Her Evening Reception
Princess Eugenie's stunning diamond and emerald tiara was a highlight of her bridal look, but the hairpiece she chose to wear with her evening reception gown has a long and fascinating royal history.
Shortly after Eugenie married Jack Brooksbank at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle, she changed into a blush-colored evening gown designed by Zac Posen for the more intimate black-tie reception at Royal Lodge.
She paired the striking silk dress with diamond and emerald drop earrings, which were a wedding gift from her groom, and a "hair slide" she borrowed from the Queen.
According to the royal family's website, Princess Eugenie "wore a hair slide belonging to Her Majesty The Queen. Queen Victoria’s Wheat-Ear Brooches were originally commissioned by William IV in 1830 for Queen Adelaide. They were passed down to Queen Victoria in 1837, and eventually to The Queen in 1952. Her Majesty has worn them as both hair slides and brooches."
As royal jewelry blogger From Her Majesty's Jewel Vault notes, there are actually six of these diamond, silver, and gold brooches which, as the name would suggest, look like stalks of wheat.
The blogger also suggests that the Queen wears them relatively infrequently, and often wears the brooches pinned to her chest as she did on the State Visit to Iman in 2010:
But in 1981 while on a visit to the United States, Elizabeth II wore one of the brooches in her hair, just as Eugenie did tonight.
As it's difficult to see the brooch in this picture, we're hoping the Palace releases another photo of Eugenie where it is in frame.
