SINGAPORE — A 20-year-old man had sex with two women while blindfolding them or covering their faces, and filmed them without their knowledge.

One victim was his 19-year-old girlfriend, while the other, aged 17, was filmed during a hotel staycation and a video call.

He then uploaded dozens of clips of them onto Twitter and Google Drive, which were discovered by his girlfriend who accessed his accounts.

The man, who is currently serving his national service, was given probation of 21 months on Monday (8 November). He had pleaded guilty to circulating obscene material, three counts of voyeurism, and one count of insulting the modesty of a woman.

Another eight charges of a similar nature were taken into consideration for his sentencing. None of the parties can be named to protect the identities of the victim.

As part of his probation conditions, the man will have to remain indoors between 10pm and 6am, perform 60 hours of community service, and undergo treatment programmes targeted at his offending behaviour. He will be banned from using electronic devices with camera functions unless found suitable by his probation officer or psychologist.

His brother and godmother were also placed on a bond of $5,000 to ensure the man’s good behaviour.

First victim

The accused and the 19-year-old victim were in a relationship when he gave her the usernames and passwords to his Twitter and Google Drive accounts.

She later accessed the man’s accounts and realised he had uploaded a total of 23 videos of them engaged in sexual acts. None had been recorded with her consent.

On 29 March this year, the victim found five videos of the couple having sex on his Twitter account. In some videos, she was blindfolded which in others, the camera had been hidden or the woman was facing away from it. While the account was set to private, there were 15 to 22 views for each video.

The videos, ranging from 12 seconds to more than a minute, had been uploaded by the man on 18 August last year.

The victim later logged into the man’s Google Drive account and found that he had recorded 18 videos involving sexual acts with her from 22 February 2018 to 19 February 2019. There were also five photos of the same nature.

She also found an upskirt video of an unknown woman in a lift, recorded on 2 January last year. The victim then made a police report on 30 March this year.

Court documents did not state when or if the pair broke up.

Second victim

The man also recorded the 17-year-old victim when the two had a video call. Court documents did not state their relationship.

On 10 September last year, at about 12.13am, the man asked to video call the victim, who initially refused as she was showering. The accused told her it was “okay” to call while she was in the shower, and the victim obliged. She placed her handphone on a shelf and the two spoke about starting a business.

Unbeknownst to the victim, the man recorded her showering for 14 minutes and 33 seconds and uploaded the file onto Google Drive.

Nine days later, the two went for a staycation at Hotel Michael together with two other friends. When the friends left the hotel room at night, the man had sex with the victim, while covering her face with a blanket. He then recorded the sexual acts in four videos from 10 to 44 seconds long.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Zhou Yang found that the man’s risk factors had mostly been addressed in his probation suitability report. He noted that the man had performed well in his national service. The man indicated his intention to sign on as an army regular to get a stable job.

The man’s brother and godmother are also willing to supervise him and work with his probation officer. However, the prosecution noted with concern that the man had reduced but not stopped his porn consumption and masturbation habit, though he has expressed willingness to curb it entirely.

The man’s lawyer Soon Wei Song said his client has demonstrated remorse and determination to lead a crime-free life.
