SINGAPORE — A 20-year-old male polytechnic student on internship with a hospital who had secretly recorded a staff relieving herself at Jurong Medical Centre was on Tuesday (27 July) sentenced to two years' probation.

As part of his sentence, Gerald Che Hong Yao, whose phone was found with 17 similar videos of other female staff – taken in the span of just one week – will also have to perform 60 hours of community service, and undergo psychological treatment and counselling on healthy sexuality and responsible sexual conduct.

The culprit, who is now 21, admitted taking voyeuristic videos at various locations including his school, MRT stations, public buses and shopping malls from 2016.

He will also be banned from having a phone with video-recording and photo-taking functions.

Che had pleaded guilty last month to three charges of voyeurism.

About the case

Che, who is studying information technology at Republic Polytechnic, began interning at the National University Hospital (NUH) as an IT support staff in September last year.

He was later stationed at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital before going back to NUH. In January, he was stationed at Jurong Medical Centre, which is a one-stop medical care centre offering a range of services including day surgery, outpatient specialist services and diagnostic services.

On 11 January, a 27-year-old staff entered the female staff toilet to relieve herself. Che, who had been loitering outside, followed her and raised his handphone above the toilet cubicle divider to record a video of the victim.

The victim noticed the phone but did not find Che when she exited. She made a police report later that day.

Che was arrested the next day and police officers found 17 other voyeuristic videos of female staff relieving themselves at Jurong Medical Centre, which were taken between 4 January and 11 January, in his phone.

Over nine occasions in 2020, he also recorded upskirt photos of women at various locations around Singapore. He would stand behind the victims on escalators or in lifts.

He admitted taking obscene videos from 2016 and even took two upskirt videos on escalators in his school.

For each of his proceeded charges, Che could have been jailed for up to two years, and also fined and caned.
