Liberal Party (LP) president, Senator Francis Pangilinan urges President Rodrigo Duterte to contemplate thoroughly on his planned cancellation of the barangay elections in October, and appointing barangay leaders instead of conducting the polls.
In a statement, Senator Pangilinan said, the plan is tantamount to disrespecting the rights of suffrage among electorates.
The senator added that the seemingly hasty decision made by the President is alarming, adding that it is a reflection of the alleged authoritarian ideologies of former president Ferdinand Marcos.
Senator Pangilinan also clarified that it is the people who must choose their barangay officials because they are the ones who know their leaders.
“To further postpone barangay elections and opt to instead to appoint barangay officials means to impinge on the people’s right to vote and choose their leaders. It is worrisome that the President should even contemplate such a rash decision that encroaches dangerously into authoritarian ideologies reminiscent of those harbored and exemplified by the former dictator Ferdinand Marcos,” he said. “We urge him to rethink this particular move. Let the people choose who they wish to serve them..” — Joyce Balancio | UNTV News & Rescue
