Public invited to submit names for NMPs

The Office of the Clerk of Parliament on Tuesday (2 Feb) invited the public to submit the names of individuals they believe can serve as Nominated Members of Parliament (NMPs).
A statement on the Parliament website said the submitted names should be “persons who have rendered distinguished public service, or who have brought honour to the Republic, or who have distinguished themselves in the field of arts and letters, sports, culture, the sciences, business, industry, the professions, social or community service or the labour movement”.
To qualify for appointment, an individual must be a Singapore citizen and 21 years of age or above on the day of nomination. He or she must also appear in the current register of electors, and must meet the residency requirements and be proficient in one of the following languages: English, Malay, Mandarin or Tamil.
Only those who qualify will be considered for nomination by the Special Select Committee of Parliament for appointment by the President.
Those who wish to submit names can do so via the the forms available from the Parliament website (www.parliament.gov.sg) or the Office of the Clerk of Parliament at Parliament House.
Closing date for submission of names is 23 Feb 2016 at 4.30pm.
Under the Singapore constitution, up to nine NMPs can be appointed. Each serves a two and a half year term, or until Parliament is dissolved for a general election.
