Two workers who were stranded on a gondola during a fire at a construction site in Punggol on Tuesday (16 May) have been rescued by firefighters.

The workers were conveyed to Changi General Hospital for observation for smoke inhalation.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in a post on its Facebook page at 5pm that it was alerted to the fire at the Global Indian International School construction site opposite 17 Punggol Field Walk. SCDF personnel were dispatched to the scene to fight the fire with four water jets.

A video posted by Facebook user Chegu Thamrin shows an SCDF officer rappelling down at the site to reach the workers on the gondola. A fire engine crane can be seen being extended to rescue the workers in the video.

SCDF said in another Facebook post at 6.31pm that the fire, which engulfed an area of about 30 metres by 50 metres, was under control.
