Quake hits Samar

A 5.5 magnitude earthquake hit several areas in Eastern Samar Thursday.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported the moderate quake occurred about 138 kilometers northeast of Guian at 8:43 am.

Phivolcs noted the quake was of tectonic origin and had a shallow depth of 20 kilometers. Quake was felt strongly at Intensity V in Mercedes in Eastern Samar.

The tremor also hit Tacloban City, Borongan City, General MacArthur, Eastern Samar at moderately strong Intensity IV, the agency said.
It added the same earthquake was weakly felt at Intensity III in Catbalogan City, Jaro, Dulag and Tolosa in Leyte as well and slightly felt at Intensity II in Capoocan, and Dagami in Leyte.
Phivolcs said the quake occurred after a weaker 4.1-magnitude tremblor shook Calatagan, Batangas at about 7:01 am on the same day.
No one was hurt and no property was damaged, Phivolcs added.
