For quality products, look for DTI's 'bagwis' seal

QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA—The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) advises consumers to the look for the “bagwis” seal displayed on stores or shops that certify establishments providing consumer-friendly products and services.

“Through the Bagwis Awards, businesses are given due recognition for strictly adhering to fair trade laws, for operating a clean and orderly workplace, promoting good employee-employer relationship, and excelling in customer relations, among other factors,” said DTI consumer welfare undersecretary Zenaida Maglaya.

Bagwis seals are granted to outstanding business establishments that uphold the rights of consumers and foster ethical business practices through “self-policing mechanism” to achieve a fair and honest marketplace, said Maglaya.

There are three levels of Bagwis seals; gold, silver and bronze.

Gold, the highest of the three, is given to establishments that have a system congruent to ISO 9001, the internationally recognized standard for the quality management of businesses.

The silver Bagwis seal is given to businesses that meet the “fair trade” requirements and implement a quality management system with some elements aligned to ISO 9001.

The bronze bagwis seal is awarded to a business establishment that complies with fair trade laws on consumer rights, price tag, and product standards and has a consumer welfare desk to maintain good customer relationships.

Ultimately, the bagwis seal helps protect consumers from unlawful trade practices and questionable price hikes, said Maglaya. For complaints or suggestions, call the DTI consumer assistance hotline at (02) 751-3330.
