The Queen is set to speak to the nation on Sunday (5 April) in a televised address about the Coronavirus pandemic.

This is only the fourth time in her history as monarch that Her Majesty has made a special address of this kind.

Announcing the news, the royal family revealed that the Queen's message will be broadcast to the UK and Commonwealth at 8pm on Sunday evening.

As well as being shown on TV and radio, Her Majesty's words will also be made available to hear via the royal family's official social media media channels, including the Twitter account @RoyalFamily.

While the Queen releases an annual message on Christmas Day, special broadcasts of this nature are rare – she last recorded one on the occasion of her Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

Her Majesty will record her message from Windsor Castle, where she has been residing with Prince Philip since last month.

The Queen previously issued a statement about the Coronavirus pandemic in March. In it, she said: "Many of us will need to find new ways of staying in touch with each other and making sure that loved ones are safe. I am certain we are up to that challenge. Y

"You can be assured that my family and I stand ready to play our part."

The Queen's special address to the nation will be broadcast at 8pm on Sunday, 5 April.
