- When the 9/11 attacks happened, Queen Elizabeth did something no one expected. She decided to play "The Star Spangled Banner" during the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, breaking a 600-year-old tradition in the process. Thousands of people gathered outside the Palace that day singing along to the American national anthem before a moment of silence to honor the victims of the attack.
