Queer, set in 1950, follows William Lee (played by Daniel Craig), an American expat in Mexico City. Lee spends his days alone, but when he meets Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey), a much younger, discharged soldier, his world begins to expand.

The film, directed by Luca Guadagnino, is based on the semi-autobiographical novella of the same name by William S. Burroughs, which was written in the 1950s but not published until 1985.

“He's searching,” Craig says of his character, William Lee. “Clearly from the top of the movie, he's searching for something. And he finds Allerton. And he thinks this is it, this is the one, so therefore he throws everything at it – probably awkwardly, and embarrasses himself in the process.”

Lee, screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes explains, “is this tender, embarrassing guy who loves in an almost adolescent way…In some ways, I see it as a comedy about this lovelorn person. And I was shocked by how fully Daniel committed to that. I sometimes want to yell at the screen, ‘Stop pawing at Allerton, he doesn’t like it! You’ll make him run away!’ That was all in the script but it feels so sharp because of what Daniel does with it.”

At the Golden Globes tonight, Craig is nominated for his performance as Lee in the Best Actor (Drama) category. But if you’re hoping to watch Craig’s critically acclaimed performance at home, you’ll have to wait a little longer: Queer had a limited release in theaters on November 27, 2024, and a nationwide release starting on December 13, 2024. When it does hit streaming, it will be on Max, thanks to A24’s licensing agreement with Warner Bros.
