Quinta to hit Palawan tonight, 14 areas under Storm Signal 1

Tropical Depression Quinta continues to move west at 24 kph and will bring rains to Northern Palawan, PAGASA said Wednesday afternoon.

The state weather agency also said in its Twitter account that TD Quinta will make its last landfall in Coron, Palawan, on Wednesday night, between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.

As of 4:00 p.m., PAGASA estimated the center of TD Quinta at 90 km east of Coron, Palawan.

It is currently packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near its center.

Int'l agencies

Meanwhile, unlike PAGASA, the US Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) and Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) have not downgraded their advisories.

Both weather bureaus still consider Quinta (Wukong) a tropical storm, moving at 30 kph west-northwest.

According to the JMA's 2:30 p.m. update, Quinta is packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center, and gustiness of 92.6 kph. Meanwhile, the JTWC records Quinta's gustiness at around 83 kph.

The discrepancy between wind speeds of of various weather forecasting agencies depends upon the models the weather bureaus use, GMA resident meteorologist Nathaniel "Mang Tani" Cruz explained.

"JTWC's wind speed forecast almost always appear greater because of the base time the agency computes its forecast," Mang Tani said.

"But do not worry, as these are minor differences," he added.

In fact, the three agencies are mostly in agreement with their projections of Quinta's movement over the next few days. Forecast images from the three agencies remain similar, with only minor deviances. (See individual projected tracks here, here and here.)

Landfall in Coron

PAGASA also said that Quinta is expected to be 460 km west of Coron, Palawan Thursday afternoon. By Friday afternoon, the cyclone is expected to be out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility, at 1,010 km west of Coron, Palawan.
