Rail operators are now required to inform commuters of any delays exceeding 10 minutes via train and station announcements as well as mainstream and social media, the Land Transport Authority said (LTA) on Thursday (30 November).

The move comes after numerous complaints from commuters that they had not been informed in a timely fashion about breakdowns. In one incident on 9 November, there were no announcements on social media from SMRT about a delay of up to 30 minutes on the North-South Line.

“We have received feedback from commuters on rail operators’ public announcements during service delays, and will be looking into this matter,” said an LTA spokesman, according to media reports.

On Wednesday, SMRT said that it is enhancing its SMRTConnect Mobile app to provide real-time information on train arrival times and crowd levels at station platforms by September 2018. This will include the number of trains that commuters may have to wait for before they can board.
