Saying that “car park charges have not kept pace” with cost increases, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) and the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) revealed on Thursday (30 June) how much more people would have to pay for parking at public car parks effective 1 December this year.

“The last island-wide revision of car parking charges by HDB and URA was done 14 years ago in 2002. Over this period, the costs of building, operating and managing car parks have increased due to general inflation, as well as construction, manpower and other related maintenance costs,” the agencies said in a joint statement that follows media reports last week that the rates would go up.

For those parking outside of the restricted zone and designated area, the charges will rise by $0.10, from $0.50 to $0.60 per half-hour, while those within those areas will see their charges rise by $0.20, from $1.00 to $1.20 per half-hour.

Meanwhile, residents who buy season parking for their first car will pay a lower rate than those who require more than one parking lot or non-residents who use HDB carparks, the statement said.

The cost of season parking for a resident’s first car will be $80 a month for surface car parks, which is a $15 increase from the current $65, and $110 a month for sheltered car parks, up $20 from the current $90.

For non-residents or those with a second car, season parking for a surface car park will cost $90, up $25, or $120 for sheltered car parks, an increase of $30.

Family Season Parking Ticket holders who currently enjoy a concessionary rate will continue to do so and will pay half of the residents’ first car season parking rate ($40 per month for surface car parks and $55 per month for sheltered car parks).

No changes were made to the parking charges for motorcycles.

Motorists using public car parks will have to use new parking coupons starting from 1 December this year. Old unused parking coupons can be exchanged for new ones from early October by topping up the difference in value, the statement added.
