KUALA PERLIS: The Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail is awarding 50 royal scholarships to Malaysians pursuing doctorate studies at Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIAM) this year.
Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik said for the purpose, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin had consented to the setting up of a Jamalullail Chair at UIAM.
“The ruler is offering the award for the first time, totalling RM5 million in support of efforts by the government and the ministry , especially to assist in the country’s education development,” he told reporters last night after an audience with Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin at Istana Arau last night.
Maszlee said UIAM and the Perlis Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council would work together to determine the criteria for eligible candidates to apply for the scholarships.
Priority for the scholarships would be given to Perlis-born applicants in the B40 group, he added. - Bernama © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
