A 10-year-old girl in India who was allegedly raped by her uncle has given birth to a daughter after being denied an abortion.

The pregnancy was discovered after she complained to her parents that she was experiencing stomach pains.

The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was allegedly raped by her uncle for several months.

India’s Supreme Court denied her the opportunity to have an abortion because it claimed that the pregnancy was far too advanced.

She has not been told she was pregnant, with her parents instead reportedly telling her she had a stone in her stomach that needed to be surgically removed.

“She gave birth through C-section today. Both the girl and her baby are doing fine,” doctor Dasari Harish told AFP.

“The surgery was uneventful. There were no complications whatsoever. The baby weighed 2.2 kilos (4.8 pounds) and is in the neonatal ICU for now.”

The parents have reportedly put the baby up for adoption.

The baby was born by caesarean section on Thursday morning in Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab. She weighed 5.5lbs.

Indian law forbids abortions after 20 weeks , although courts have previously made exceptions when the foetus could not survive or is at risk of endangering the mother’s life.

Medical experts warn that delivering a baby at the age of 15 or younger can potentially be life-threatening, with risks including high blood pressure, anaemia, and even haemorrhaging.
