SINGAPORE — A rare corpse flower in Sembawang that bloomed on Sunday has been cut down.

Sembawang GRC Member of Parliament Lim Wee Kiak and netizens have posted on Facebook about the missing flower.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday (8 June), Dr Lim said, “I hope all of us can be more gracious, more respectful and more caring towards our nature. We have so much nature beauty here especially in Sembawang that we can admire and enjoy together.”

Just a day earlier, Dr Lim said on Facebook that he went down beside the walkway of Blk 338 Sembawang Crescent to take a look at the flower of the elephant foot yam plant, which he said measured about 45 to 50cm.

One netizen, Li-May Chew, also posted on Nature Society (Singapore)'s Facebook page on Monday about her viewing of the flower up close. She later wrote an update about the missing flower and said, “Sigh, guess we aren’t at the point where good things can be shared (yet)”.

According to the website of National Parks (NParks), the flower of the plant, which is known by its scientific name of amorphophallus paeoniifolius, emits “decaying odour which attracts pollinator carrion flies and beetles, and fades after flowers are pollinated”. The plant can reach up to a maximum height of 2.5 metres, with a width of up to 3m, NParks said.
