Razer plans to boost its headcount in Singapore to 1,000 staff by the end of next year from 400 currently, said co-founder and chief executive Tan Min-Liang on Friday (22 February), as he unveiled plans for the gaming peripherals firm’s upcoming Southeast Asia headquarters.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of the $100 million building for the HQ, Tan said, “We are looking to ensure that we nurture, mentor and groom the next generation of really highly skilled engineers, designers and future entrepreneurs.”

Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat, Singapore Economic Development Board chairman Beh Swan Gin, and JTC Corporation chief executive Ng Lang were among the guests-of-honour at the event.

The building in one north is funded and developed by by Snakepit-BP, a joint venture between Singapore-listed Boustead Projects and private investors led by Tan. Razer will be the anchor tenant, renting 19,300 square metres over seven floors, when the building is completed in mid-2020.

“From the tech perspective, this will be one of the most technologically advanced buildings in the world,” Tan said. “From the ground up, we have made sure it is infused with everything – from AI, deep learning, key learning, immersive technology.”

The building will be managed by Echo Base-BP Capital, a digital real estate startup backed by SGX-listed Boustead Projects and Moor House Capital, which is majority-owned by Tan and ex-banker Bryan Lim.

Founded in Singapore in 2005 by Tan, Hong Kong-listed Razer is headquartered in both San Francisco and Singapore with 15 offices worldwide. Razer’s gaming accessories, which range from laptops, phones, watches to software, are popular among gamers around the world.

Razer announced earlier this week that it will shut its Razer Game Store, which was launched less than a year ago, by the end of this month. In tandem with the closure, it has shut down several projects and laid off about 30 employees, or 2 per cent of its global headcount.
