Recording of victim who was allegedly raped by her son played in court
“Why did you force me?” That was the distressing response of a woman to her 33-year-old son after he had allegedly raped and molested her.
It was part of a recorded conversation between the woman and the accused, who is claiming trial for the alleged offences, which was played in the High Court on Tuesday (19 July).
The identities of the man and his family members cannot be revealed due to a gag order.
The man, who is facing one count each of rape, molestation and aggravated molestation, is said to have committed the offence around 2.30 am on 4 October 2013 at the family’s one-bedroom flat.
The victim made the recording after the alleged incident. She had left the flat and contacted her son with a mobile phone while using another phone to record the conversation.
In the recording, the victim sounded distressed as she asked her son repeatedly in Malay why he had committed the offence. When she asked her son if he had any recollection of the incident, a muffled male voice was heard saying that he “remembered everything and he liked it.”
The recording also revealed that the victim was unable to face her son after the incident and had indicated that she wanted to disappear. She said, “You want to sleep with your own mother like this. I don’t want to see your face. I am ashamed to look at you, a son doing something like this to his own mother.”
The victim, who had two other sons, had divorced the accused’s father and remarried. She was staying with her husband and the accused when the incident happened.
Also taking the stand was the victim’s husband, who said that he was at work when the incident happened.
The husband said that he received a call from his daughter-in-law who told him that his wife was at her house at about 7am and was distraught. The man immediately went over to the house and found his wife crying. When he asked what had happened, his daughter-in-law gestured that the victim had been raped.
The daughter-in-law, who also testified, told the court that the victim usually babysits her daughters everyday. When she received a call from the victim, she was puzzled that her mother-in-law had turned up an hour earlier than expected.
The victim met her daughter-in-law at the latter’s flat and cried, saying that her son “had wanted to f**k her”. The younger woman then proceeded to call her father-in-law and her husband.
The victim’s two other sons also gave evidence in court. The trial will continue on Wednesday (20 July).
If convicted, the accused could be jailed for up to 20 years, caned and fined. For aggravated molestation, he could be jailed up to 10 years and caned. For molestation, the accused is facing a jail term of up to two years’ and caning.
