Red Bull Paper Wings: Fly Your Paper Planes High On The World Stage

Remember folding paper planes in school when you were bored in class? How about taking that into a proper international championship?
That is what Red Bull aims to do with the annual Red Bull Paper Wings competition — the world’s biggest and most exciting paper plane contest. The recipe for success requires a strong dose of exceptional folding abilities as well as creativity, imagination, and a grasp of basic aeronautic rules.
More than 80 countries in four continents are battling it out in qualiflyers (get it?) and national finals for prestigious spots on the World Finals in Austria at the iconic Hangar-7, Salzburg Airport to compete amid the world’s most spectacular flying machines on display on 8 & 9 May.
In Singapore’s National Finals on April 1 at the Singapore Management University, a star-studded jury featuring hip-hop artiste ShiGGa Shay and Red Bull athlete Farris Rahman will pick the best of the best in three categories: most aerobatic flight, longest airtime and longest distance travelled by their paper planes. 3 national winners will be picked to represent Singapore on the World Finals.
A total of 7 qualiflyers in Singapore were held from 10 March in various tertiary institutions, including the last one to be held on April 1 just before the National Finals at the same place.
This is the fourth edition of Red Bull Paper Wings globally, and the second time that this one-of-a-kind competition will return to Singapore.
More than 37,000 fierce competitors from 83 countries took part in the last qualifiers in 2012 and that number is set to rise this year as they chase to dethrone Lebanon’s Elie Chemaly, who won with the longest airtime of 10.68 seconds in 2012. Tomas Beck, from the Czech Republic is the titleholder when it comes to distance with a flight of 50.37 meters in 2012. American Ryan Naccarato and Poland’s Tomasz Chodryra both share the aerobatics world title currently.
