KAJANG: Until August, an estimated 8,000 illegal immigrants are being detained at the immigration depots nationwide. The number was the outcome of the ongoing operations conducted by the Immigration Department including Op Mega that was initiated after the rehiring programme of illegal immigrants expired on June 30. Immigration Department director-general Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali said the standard operating procedures (SOP) at the depots was being reviewed regularly to ensure the safety and comfort of detainees. He said priority was given to the detainees’ health and welfare; well-being of the staff as well as the logistics. “The focus will be on the welfare and the health of the detainees. Therefore, SOPs at all depots will be reviewed from time to time,” he told reporters after visiting Semenyih Immigration Depot on Monday. There are 13 immigration depots in the country where each state has one depot except Perlis. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
