Remains of student who drowned in N. Zealand laid to rest


ALOR STAR: The body of 21-year-old Abdul Amzar Azim Azmi, the Malaysian student who drowned in Lake Karapiro, New Zealand, on Feb 26, was laid to rest at his hometown in Hutan Kampung here.

More than 100 family members and friends attended the funeral ceremony, held at about 10.30am at Masjid Jamek Kampung Belukar.

Prior to the funeral, the body was transported from his home to the mosque for prayers at 10am.

Abdul Amzar's body had arrived at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) from Auckland, New Zealand, at about 8.54pm last night.

From there, the remains were transported by van to Kedah and arrived here at about 5.20am.

The third-year MARA-sponsored student was studying Mechanical Engineering at Waikato University, Hamilton.

Abdul Amzar went missing while swimming in Lake Karapiro, where he often exercised with university mates.

His body was discovered by local authorities a day after he went missing.
