Remand of cop in bribery investigation extended; two colleagues released on bail

KOTA KINABALU: Two policemen were released on bail while their other colleague has his remand extended until Friday for receiving a bribe worth RM1,200. The trio with corporal rank were under the custody of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for a week since Aug 24. They were arrested for allegedly not taking action against illegal immigrants while patrolling a shopping mall premises here on Aug 22. Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus ordered a bail of RM10,000 with two local sureties for each of the men. Both of them were also ordered to report to MACC office every month. Cindy also approved the commission’s application to extend remand for the other policeman. MACC’s deputy public prosecutor Mohd Faliq Basarudin said the duo, aged 35 and 36, were released after the commission was satisfied with the investigation outcome. However, they have to extend remand for the other policeman, based here, as he was still needed to assist into the investigations. Case is being investigated under Section 17 (a) MACC Act 2009 which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and fine not less than five times the bribe or RM 10,000, whichever is higher. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
