Residents Want DBKL To Upgrade Jalan Sentul

With several ongoing residential development projects set to be completed in the next few years, Sentul residents called on Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to upgrade Jalan Sentul and review its traffic impact assessment for the area.

Social activist and Sentul resident Datuk VM Panjamorthy estimated that around 50,000 vehicles use the road daily, with the bulk passing the area during the morning and evening peak hours, reported The Star.

“There were 12 new condominiums completed in the past four to five years and there are about 10 projects coming up in the next two years…Let’s not forget about the development that has not started but is in the pipeline,” he said.

“But there is no upgrading done to Jalan Sentul…Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) should take into consideration the residential projects mushrooming in the area.”

He noted that the density in Sentul is “high and the road can no longer cope with the population”.

To alleviate traffic congestion, Panjamorthy suggested the implementation of a tidal-flow system in Jalan Sentul, much like the one introduced in Jalan Loke Yew.

“There are three lanes on Jalan Sentul, two can be used for traffic from Jalan Enam and one lane can be used for the contra-flow towards Jalan Enam during peak hours…Right now, motorists have to take a detour to Jalan Amra from Jalan Sentul before turning into Jalan Enam which connects to Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah (previously known as Jalan Ipoh),” he said.

“This inconvenience causes traffic to build up in Jalan Enam and the Jalan Amra junction to Jalan Sentul.”

The traffic from Jalan Sentul may also be dispersed by linking Jalan Perhentian – the road between Church of St Joseph and SJK(C) Chi Man Sentul – to the road beside Sentul KTM station.

Meanwhile, a DBKL spokesman advised residents to approach the manager at DBKL’s Batu branch to explore a long-term solution for their concern.

“Any changes in traffic require extensive studies as they must not impact other roads in the vicinity,” he added.
