Resume hacks for fresh grads: 7 personalised career objective statements

Possibly the most important section in your entire resume, the career objective statement is a short blurb that sits at the top of your resume. The purpose of this blurb is to tell the recruiter why you’re the best person for the job, or at the very least, to intrigue the recruiter enough to shortlist you for an interview.

Being the first section the recruiter sees, the career objective statement is key to making a favourable first impression that will hopefully interest him or her enough to continue reading. Unlike the resume summary which contains more information on professional work experience, the career objective statement is commonly used by fresh graduates, focusing more on academic achievements, personal attributes and internship experience.

We recommend a structure with the following components:

  • 1st line: Highlight your academic background and any work experience you have (internships and volunteer work counts too).

  • 2nd line: Describe your key attributes in relation to the job you’re applying for.

  • 3rd line: Share your values and what drives you.

The following personalised examples have been written for those of you looking to work in Sales, Marketing, HR, Accounting, Finance, IT & Engineering.
