Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya (PNA) - The Cagayan Valley region remains as the country's second largest producer of rice, a regional executive of the Department of Agriculture (DA) here said.

Orlando Lorenzana, DA's regional technical director for research, said the region has sustained its record as one of the top three rice producers, with 281 percent in terms of rice production volume alongside with Central Luzon and Western Visayas as top 1 and 3 regions, respectively.

"We are sufficient on palay surplus with 1.6 million metric tons produced last year, posting an 80 cavans per hectare average yield among farmers in Cagayan Valley," he said.

He said the DA is now focusing its attention on cloud seeding operations in the region in order to address the below normal rainfall condition in the southern parts of Isabela and Cagayan provinces.

"We have already recorded 14 percent post harvest losses on rice and we hope to prevent it further so that we can sustain our rice sufficiency in the region," Lorenzana said.
