Richard Branson: The Next Thing I Knew, I Was Being Hurled Over the Handlebars

If you fall flat on your face, at least youre moving forward.

Sir Richard Branson has shared photos of his injuries after falling off his bike earlier this week.

Branson was training for the Virgin Strive Challenge, an annual tradition begun in 2014 centered around a physical challenge designed to be seriously tough to undertake. Judging by the Virgin Group founder's injuries, even the training is seriously tough.

In a post about the experience, titled My life flashed before my eyes, Branson explains just how close this particular brush with death was for the man known as an adventure seeker.

I was heading down a hill towards Leverick Bay when it suddenly got really dark and I managed to hit a sleeping policeman hump in the road head on, Branson writes. The next thing I knew, I was being hurled over the handlebars and my life was literally flashing before my eyes.

Branson said he was wearing a helmetluckilybut landed hard on his shoulder and cheek.

My bike went flying off the cliff and disappeared. Weve since recovered the crumpled bicycle, completely destroyed, he writes. My cheek has been badly damaged and my knee, chin, shoulder and body severely cut.

He doesn't seem deterred, though. The 2016 Strive Challenge will involve a month-long journey from the base of the Matterhorn, hiking and biking and swimming more than 1,200 miles to the summit of Mt. Etna, in Sicily.

My attitude has always been, if you fall flat on your face, at least youre moving forward, Branson says. All you have to do is get back up and try again. At least Im practicing what I preachthough a little too literally!
