Rio's beaches packed amid heatwave, spurring COVID fears

Brazil had 83,340 new cases of the novel coronavirus reported in the last 24 hours, and 259 deaths from COVID-19, the Health Ministry said on Monday (January 24).

"This is unfortunate, we need leaders who listen to science and avoid any type of agglomeration at any cost," infectious disease expert Roberto Medronho told Reuters.

The Brazilian cities of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo announced on Friday (January 21) they are postponing colorful parades typically seen during Carnival to the end of April due to an increase in COVID-19 cases as Omicron spreads through the country.
