SINGAPORE — A motorist who attacked another road user during an argument barely two months after completing his prison sentence for road rage was on Thursday (31 October) sent back to jail.

Muhammad Fuad Kamroden had also assaulted two other motorists, and another man who bumped into his shoulder at a shopping mall, over the next three years.

The 35-year-old Singaporean was on Thursday sentenced to a total jail term of two years, three months and six weeks. He will also be banned from driving for one year after his release from prison.

Fuad had earlier pleaded guilty to two charges of using criminal force, and one count each of causing hurt and causing grievous hurt.

Two charges under the Protection From Harassment Act were considered in sentencing.

Broke lorry driver’s nose

On 19 May 2016, Fuad was jailed for seven weeks for road rage. Less than two months after his release, he broke a 52-year-old lorry driver’s nose during a squabble.

The victim had been looking for a parking lot at the National University of Singapore when Fuad overtook him as he felt the former was driving too slowly and was blocking the road. As he passed the lorry, Fuad showed his middle finger to the victim.

Fuad stopped his car in front of the lorry and the driver approached Fuad. Both men then began arguing and Fuad punched the victim several times in the face, head and stomach.

While being assaulted, the victim managed to call his brother for help. The victim also threatened to report Fuad to the police, prompting the assailant to punch him on the nose.

Fuad stopped his attack only when his mother, who was in his car, and another passer-by intervened.

The victim called the police. He had six fractures to his nose with facial abrasions and had to be hospitalised for six days.

Assaulted cabby, passer-by

While out on bail for assaulting the lorry driver, Fuad attacked a taxi driver at about 2.40am on 2 December 2017.

Fuad, who was working as a Grab driver, overtook the victim while in the queue at a Clarke Quay taxi stand.

Fuad’s left side mirror collided with the right side mirror of the victim’s taxi. Fuad then lowered his front passenger window and shouted vulgarities at the 46-year-old victim before cutting into the latter’s lane.

The two alighted and met in front of a road marshal, who stated that the victim had stopped at the right place. A dispute ensued, during which Fuad pointed his middle finger at the victim and pushed his left cheek. The victim then called the police.

On 6 May last year, Fuad also behaved aggressively towards a man who bumped into him while walking at VivoCity shopping mall. Fuad bumped his chest against the victim and pushed him several times.

An off-duty police officer intervened but Fuad continued to be aggressive, asking the officer to go away and telling him the matter was none of his business. Fuad was later brought to the mall’s fire control centre by security guards to await the arrival of policemen.

Assaulted elderly cabby

On 26 February, Fuad also used violence on a 71-year-old taxi driver while at a junction along Selegie Road. The victim had been first in line as the traffic light turned green but was forced to suddenly brake when Fuad cut into his lane.

The cabby honked at Fuad, who pointed his middle finger at the victim before riding off on his motorcycle.

When both men were at the next junction, the taxi driver alighted and confronted Fuad. As he held onto Fuad’s motorcycle, Fuad punched him in the face, causing him to fall.

Fuad then tried to dismount his motorcycle but lost his balance and the vehicle fell on him. Both men then waited for police to arrive.

For causing grievous hurt, Fuad could have been jailed for up to 10 years, along with a fine or caning.

The maximum punishment for causing hurt is up to two years’ jail and a fine of up to $5,000.

For using criminal force, Fuad could have been jailed for up to three months and fined up to $1,500.
