Roger, a kangaroo who hit the headlines for his enormous muscular body, has died.

The rescue roo was saved as a little joey when his mother was killed in a road accident. He lived to the age of 12 at the Kangaroo Sanctuary in Alice Springs, Australia.

The sanctuary confirmed his death with a touching tribute to their “beautiful boy”.

Chris “Brolga” Barns set up the sanctuary so he would have a safe place to raise Roger.

The kangaroo thrived, and grew to be an impressive 6ft 7 tall and 89kg (196lbs) in weight an alpha with 12 mates.

“At the beginning, there was a close bond but soon he looked at me as competition and wanted to fight me,” said Mr Barns.

Roger initially hit the headlines when an image of him crushing a metal bucket using his massive muscles went viral in 2015.

“Roger was as muscular as they come,” Mr Barns told the BBC.

While Roger’s size and strength weren’t entirely unique, his hench stature still set him apart from many other male kangaroos.

“Ever since he was featured on TV and clips went viral, there’s been a lot of love and attention for him,” Mr Barns added.

“Now that he passed away, we are again getting a lot of attention and have received condolences from people around the world.”
