Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic ease into third round of Australian Open
Roger Federer played an almost perfect game against Filip Krajinovic to progress through to the third round of the Australian open.
Federer beat the world No 41 6-1, 6-4, 6-1 in his quest to win a 21st Grand Slam and match Djokovic’s seven Australian Open titles.
The Swiss star is now just one win away from becoming the first player to win 100 matches at Melbourne.
Federer said: “I am very happy. It is a great start to the season so far. I am feeling really relaxed out on the court. I trained hard and you hope it pays off and not that it was all for nothing this week.
“I am happy, I am still going and I am looking forward to the next one. Hopefully another good match.”
Federer will next face Australian John Millman, who beat him in four sets at the 2018 US Open, in the third round on Friday as they battle for a place in the last 16.
When asked about the upcoming match, Federer said: “He’s fit like a fiddle. I’ve lost to him in the past... he’s from this country so naturally also it’s going to be different intensity. I think this is going to be a good test for me.”
Djokovic also eased through to the third round of the competition, defeating Ttsuma Ito 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.
He said: “My serve was working extremely well in first round and second round. That’s something I worked on in the off-season.
“That’s one of the priorities I guess of the training sessions, trying to get that I think advantage of winning a lot of easy points on the first serve.
“It has been paying off so far I think in ATP Cup and here, two matches.”
Djokovic, who is chasing his 17th Grand Slam title, will next face Yoshihito Nisioka, who eliminated Brit Dan Evans in the straight sets.
