Napoli's defender from Romania Vlad Chiriches was injured playing against Montenegro last week, which ended in a goalless draw

Romania captain Vlad Chiriches has undergone successful surgery after suffering torn anterior cruciate knee ligaments playing in the Nations League, his Italian club Napoli said on Monday.

The 28-year-old former Tottenham Hotspur defender was injured playing against Montenegro last week, which ended in a goalless draw.

"The surgery was successful ... the defender will remain a couple of days in the clinic and then immediately start physiotheraphy," the Serie A runners-up said.

Carlo Ancelotti's side are fifth in Serie A after losing one of their three opening games, and begin their Champions League campaign at Red Star Belgrade next Tuesday, before hosting Liverpool on October 3.
