Investigations are underway after two people were killed in an eight-vehicle crash in east London.

A man in his 40s and a woman in her 50s died in the crash, which happened in Romford on Thursday afternoon, while another six people were taken to hospital.

None of the six were believed to be in a life-threatening condition, the Metropolitan police said.

Police are investigating the causes of the crash on Squirrels Heath Road.

Emergency services were called shortly after 1.15pm, and the London Fire Brigade (LFB) had to cut a number of people free from their cars.

Investigators initially thought seven vehicles were involved, but then amended the number to eight.

Pictures of the scene showed one one vehicle on its roof wedged against a bus, while a blue and a black hatchback was left at an angle on the other side of the road.

A silver Range Rover was also involved but seemed undamaged, whilst a white car had been almost shredded by the impact.

Following the crash, a police cordon was around around the site while road traffic collision investigators were taking images and footage of the crash as they began their investigation.

An electrical engineer also tested the traffic lights at the junction, although the collision took place around 20m from the lights.
