Rooney Mara approached for Mary Magdalene biopic

Rooney Mara has become well known for portraying literary figures

Oscar nominee Rooney Mara is in discussions over the title role for Garth Davis's biopic of Biblical figure Mary Magdalene.

Davis worked with Mara on "Lion," a novel adaptation which is currently in post-production, and has identified the American actress as his choice to play Mary Magdalene, well known follower of Jesus Christ.

Mara has most recently won plaudits for her performance opposite Cate Blanchett in "Carol," following on from "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" in 2011.

According to Biblical accounts, Mary Magdalene's life was turned around after an encounter with Nazarene traveler Jesus, and she became a key witness to the Judean's controversial career, subsequent death, and reported resurrection.

Centuries of religious interpretation have led to varied and sometimes conflicting readings of Mary's character; Deadline Hollywood describes Davis's biopic as an attempt to provide "an authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history."

The production is tracking for a 2017 release.
