'Euphoria' Season Two's New Trailer Promises Double the Drugs
I miss Euphoria. Is that OK to say? It's been a long time. I miss the Sunday nights I spent in Euphoria’s no-named, vaguely tropical teenage romper-room-world, where a fog machine hot-boxed every street, and “Blow the Whistle” is canon in a Gen Z high school dance soundtrack. But it’s alright. I had Detective Zendaya, learned the ins and outs of dick pics, cried over some spilled chili, and witnessed the most asinine game of football ever to grace the small screen.
Well good news for me and you other young carnival-goers: Euphoria just debuted its first full-length trailer for Season Two. And if you had any doubt it would be, it's a doozy. Rue is fully back in action, trolling around in busy streets, lugging around a suitcase full of drugs. Sydney Sweeney's Cassie doesn't know what day it is. Nate looks like he's scaring a gas station cashier into selling him booze. Fez is definitely getting into legal trouble. Along with everyone else, most likely. Euphoria! How I missed you. We don't get much, story-wise, from the preview—it's more of a music video featuring Euphoria peeps—but the new season is nearly here, so we'll take it.
Here's everything we know about the future of Euphoria—including what we might see in a full-length Season Two, given what's happened in the bridge episodes.
What Is Euphoria Season Two Going to Be About?
Let's start with the two standalone episodes that debuted in December 2020 and January 2021, focusing on Rue and Jules, respectively. The first special episode of Euphoria—which depicted a moving, hour-long diner conversation between Rue and Colman Domingo's Ali—showed us that Rue survived her relapse. And it's Ali, the man who Rue was introduced to at a recovery meeting, and later became a mentor to her, who helps our hero come back from her relapse. In the second standalone episode, which focused on Jules, we saw a similar one-on-one dialogue, watching her open up to a new therapist, Dr. Mardy Nichols, played by Lauren Weedman. While Rue struggles with her addiction and finding motivation to recover in her episode, Jules recounts the hardships of her transition, as well as her difficult history from dating online. (Unfortunately, Nate still exists in the world of this show.) At the end of the episode, Rue and Jules run into each other—but Rue runs away before anything can really be said.
That puts us in a difficult spot heading into Season Two: After Rue recovers, it seems like Jules comes back home from college for a break, when, maybe, they'll have another shot at a reunion. As for where we might see Rue go in the next full season? We saw her stay sober for the better part of Euphoria, even while still struggling heavily with mental illness. And even though she may have relapsed in the finale, Rue still grew as a daughter and friend in Season One, choosing her family over her love for Jules. Thematically, it’ll be interesting to see in Season Two, what is life like when you overcome your struggles for so long, only to fall back down after making what was ultimately the (morally) right decision?
And what will Rue do when it comes time to apply for college? In one of the more revealing scenes in Euphoria, Rue tells Jules that she’d be willing to follow her to fashion school in New York and do… what? Just hang around and roast dudes in Tompkins Square Park, Russian Doll style? She obviously registers a few IQ points higher than her classmates—so will she channel that into a true passion?
We'll have to wait until Season Two properly debuts to pick up with a couple other storylines, which hit their own inflection points in that wild finale: Picking up with Fez after the robbery-gone-wrong, the start of Kat and Ethan’s relationship, and what’s up with Jules in her new town. Then villainous Nate Jacobs, played by Jacob Elordi, is also out there, somewhere. In an interview with Esquire, Elordi teased that "there's a lot more time in his house, with his family," in the new season.
When Is Euphoria Coming Back for Season Two?
Euphoria will return on January 9, 2022, on HBO and HBO Max. As far as where the series might go after Season Two? Both HBO president Casey Bloys and Levinson have weighed in on Euphoria's long game. “Well, [the characters] are in high school, so there are only so many seasons it can go,” Bloys told TVLine in July. “There’s a time limit.”
Levinson added: “We’ll follow [Sam’s] lead on that... There is no set plan. But I don’t think you want 30-year-olds playing [high school students].”
For what it’s worth, I’d love to see a dad-bodded, washed up Nate Jacobs fondly remembering his football days in Season 17 of Euphoria, or 35-year-old Fez try to Shawshank himself out of jail. But that’s just me.
