Ryan Gosling-starring "Wolfman" is hunting for director

1 Jun – Another new remake has been announced as part of Universal's monster universe, which is set to be a Ryan Gosling-starrer.

The 39-year-old will be portraying the titular monster of "Wolfman", according to Variety, and the project is now on the hunt for a director.

Reportedly based on a pitch by Gosling himself, not much about the movie is known at the moment, aside from him starring and "Orange is the New Black" scribes Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo penning the script.

Cory Finley, whose directing credits include 2017's "Thoroughbreds" (one of late actor Anton Yelchin's posthumous releases) and 2019's Hugh Jackman-starring "Bad Education", is among the directors who are being eyed to helm the movie.

No other names have been mentioned and there are reportedly no frontrunners for the directing gig either at the moment.

A production date is also not set yet since presumably Gosling will first have to wrap up filming for the upcoming untitled Phil Lord and Chris Miller-directed astronaut movie that he signed up for last month.

There was previously a "Wolfman" remake planned for 2018.

The original movie "The Wolf Man" was released in 1941 and was remade in 2010 as "The Wolfman", which was a box office bomb but it did receive an Oscar for Best Makeup.

Several efforts of remaking the movie have long been in motion, the last widely discussed project was the remake that was supposed to have been written by Aaron Guzikowski and released in 2018. It didn't pan out due to the Tom Cruise-starring "The Mummy" failing to be the success that the studio had hoped for.

However, Universal successfully relaunched its monster universe earlier this year with the Leigh Whannell-helmed "The Invisible Man", which made USD126.7 million at the worldwide box office on a USD7 million budget. It is currently the fifth highest grossing movie of 2020, as cinemas across the globe have been temporarily shut down since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Aside from "Wolfman", other movies planned as part of the new monster universe include a James Wan-produced movie, Paul Feig's Dark Army movie, Dexter Fletcher and Robert Kirkman's "Renfield" and Elizabeth Banks' "The Invisible Woman".
