BELURAN: A man who stopped his car to check on two men and a woman lying on the road ended up being robbed.

In the 5.30am incident yesterday, the 30-year-old driver was passing Kampung Bauto in Telupid, while heading to Sandakan from Kota Kinabalu.

But he brought his car to a stop when he noticed the prone bodies of three people lying on the road.

One of the three – a man – suddenly rose and approached the victim’s car. The victim wound down his car window, expecting the man to ask him for assistance.

"(Instead), the man pulled the victim's hand and took his watch," district police chief superintendent Shivananthan Velautham said.

When the victim got out of his car to confront the man, the latter attempted to assault him.

But luck was on the victim’s side, as residents of Kampung Bato were alerted to the incident, and intervened before the man could do any harm.

“The villagers detained the man and handed him to a policeman who arrived on the scene later.

"Villagers also caught the woman, but the second man managed to flee," Sivananthan said.

Initial investigation revealed that the duo is a married Filipino couple, aged between 30 and 60, without valid documents.
