SANDAKAN: Seven young siblings are reported missing after a mudslide swept their house into the Sungai Labou Tongod near here, on Friday evening.

It is learnt that the missing children are aged between eight and 17. Their parents survived the mudslide and were taken to a clinic for treatment.

The district Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call at 10.30am yesterday after estate workers noticed that one of the worker’s quarters had vanished.

A team of firefighters from the Sandakan and Keningau districts was deployed to the area to carry out a search and rescue operation.

As of noon today, the victims remain missing, and the search operation is focused on the Sungai Penangah and Sungai Masarung areas.

“The operation is challenging, as there is no network coverage in the area,” said Keningau Fire and Rescue chief Mudi Pengiran, adding that it was raining when the mudslide occurred.
