Sacha Baron Cohen reveals footage of terrifying escape from right-wing rally after 'Borat 2' prank

Watch: Trailer for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

Sacha Baron Cohen has unveiled nail-biting footage of his scary escape from a right-wing rally during the filming of Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.

The 49-year-old comedian was spotted earlier this year in disguise at a rally in Washington DC staged to protest against coronavirus restrictions.

He took to the stage as a singer, encouraging the crowd to join him in a song referencing Joe Biden, Barack Obama, “the Wuhan flu” and the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The star later revealed the stunt would feature in the Borat sequel and has now unveiled video footage of his dramatic escape.

In the tense clip, Baron Cohen flees the event when angry protesters approach the safety barrier and begin to climb towards the stage.

He is then seen ducking down inside a truck, before holding the door closed as people yell from outside and try to get to him.

Baron Cohen previously wrote about the escape in a Time Magazine op-ed, saying he was “fortunate to make it out in one piece” after protesters blocked his route to freedom and banged on the vehicle.

He added: “Under my overalls, I was wearing a bulletproof vest, but it felt inadequate with some people outside toting semiautomatic weapons.

“When someone ripped open the door to drag me out, I used my entire body weight to pull the door back shut until our vehicle manoeuvred free.”

The scene is just one of the shocking moments in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, which debuted on Amazon Prime Video last week after the streamer shelled out a reported $80m (£62m) for the rights.

Baron Cohen ambitiously shot the follow-up to his 2006 comedy hit — in which he reprises the role of clueless Kazakh journalist Borat Sagdiyev — during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The movie has grabbed headlines as a result of the actions of key Donald Trump ally Rudy Giuliani, who was caught up in a prank involving actor Maria Bakalova as Borat’s daughter Tutar.

Giuliani appeared to put his hand down his trousers while in a hotel room with the actor, though the former New York City mayor has claimed he was merely tucking in his shirt.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm has received strong reviews from critics, scoring an 85% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Baron Cohen won a Golden Globe for his performance in the first film and has tipped breakout co-star Bakalova for an Oscar victory this year.

The film has gone down less well with nonprofit organisation the Kazakh American Association, though, who dubbed the film “racist”.

The organisation added that the movie could “incite violence against a highly vulnerable and underrepresented minority ethnic group”.
