Safari the fastest growing browser, says e-commerce study

While Chrome and Internet Explorer might be the world's most popular browsers, it is Mobile Safari that is the fastest growing web browser over the past year, according to data released June 1 by e-commerce technology company Monetate.

According to the study, the use of Mobile Safari on its sites, which include e-commerce sites such as QVC, has gone from 5.84 percent in Q1 2011 to 11.2 percent in Q1 2012.

While this growth doesn't make Mobile Safari, the native browser for iOS, the top browser, it does mean that it is the fastest growing.

However as techcrunch.com, which reported on this data, points out, the results are drawn from data aggregated from Monetate customers, including over 100 top e-commerce sites such as QVC and Urban Outfitters, and therefore gives only a limited view of the complete browser market.

According to May 21 data from browser tracking site Statcounter.com published on sites such as techlogon.com, Google's Chrome just recently overtook Internet Explorer (IE) to become the most popular browser in the world, with 32.52 percent of the market share, compared to IE's 32.12 percent; Firefox is ranked third with 25.48 percent while Safari comes in at 7.12 percent.
