Sam Smith has said they are open to dating any gender in their search or love.

The 28-year-old, who came out as gay when they were 10 years old, previously had a high-profile relationship with 13 Reasons Why actor Brandon Flynn.

However, Smith has now said they will not limit their dating life to one gender and is open to having relationships with women, men and non-binary people.

“I’ve never really kind of played by the rule book. I love people and whoever I fall for, that’s who I fall for. I don’t know who that’s going to be,” the “Stay With Me” singer told The Sun.

“Now I don’t know what gender they will be, to be quite honest, and that’s a freeing thing – to not be limited to one category of person. I just fall in love with whoever I fall in love with.”

They continued: “I generally have never really thought about people, any human beings, in rigid terms.

“I’ve grown up in a family where the gender power balance and all these things were completely shifted. My mum worked, my dad was a househusband. My sisters are incredibly strong women.”

Smith added that it is “hard” to find love as a celebrity, and that they have had “many, many” bad experiences on the dating scene.

“I’m trying to look at all experiences now as a wonderful thing,” Smith explained.

“Fame in general, it takes a minute to get your head round it. I think it’s just going to take a little bit longer for me to find someone.”

In September 2019, Smith came out as non-binary on social media and revealed that they would be using they and them pronouns going forward.

“Today is a good day so here goes. I've decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM after a lifetime of being at war with my gender I've decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out,” Smith wrote at the time.

“I'm so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision but I've been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think but f*** it.”

They continued: “I understand there will be many mistakes and misgendering but all I ask is you please please try. I hope you can see me like I see myself now. Thank you.”

In a recent interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe, Smith said they would like to have children in the near future.

“I want kids. I want all of it. I want to have kids,” they said.

“I want to be with the kids and I want to watch them grow and be with them every day. I want to be mummy.”
