Samsung plans to release a round watch to compete with Apple

Samsung has announced a new interface for its next series of Gear connected watches

The next connected watch by Samsung should for the first time adopt a more conventional look and offer a round screen, like the Moto 360 or the LG Watch Urbane for example. In fact, it was on the day of the Apple Watch's release that the South Korean company announced the release of a development kit (SDK).

The images that accompanied the press release announcing a kit for developers each depicted a round face showing various examples of apps (FidMe, CNN, Yelp and Baidu). Watches with a round screen are not only the more appealing products, but also the most supported by the Android Wear ecosystem. This model, of which no details have surfaced, could also function with Tizen, Samsung's own mobile solution already installed on the Gear 2, 2 Lite and S.

Until now, Samsung had only offered "geek" format watches, rectangular in either black or white. Presented at IFA in September 2013, the very first Samsung Gear was at the time the pioneer of the nascent market for connected watches.

Watches for Android Wear and Tizen

The Galaxy Gear range connects to your smartphone or tablet and takes control of it from a distance thanks to a Bluetooth connection. For fewer than $300, the original model had a Super AMOLED screen measuring 1.63in (320x320) and is equipped with an Exynos processor set to 800MHz, a 1.9MP camera, 4GB of internal memory, an NFC chip, a gyroscope and an accelerometer.

A few months later, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Samsung presented its first two models for Tizen, the Galaxy Gear 2 and Galaxy 2 Neo. The company's first "round" watch will without a doubt be a decisive next step in its strategy to conquer this ever-expanding market.
