SANDAKAN: Marine police recorded 14 various offences during a three-day boat inspection operation at the port area here.
Fifty one boats and nine fish cages were inspected by marine police personnel in the operation, which ended yesterday.
District marine chief Assistant Superintendent Mazre Che Mahmood said the enforcement team detected 14 offences involving license misuse, exceeding passenger-carrying capacity, and lack of safety equipment, among others.
“The operation was aimed at enforcing existing laws under the Ports and Harbours Act 2002, and Regulations of Ports and Harbours (government wharves) 2008.
“Our operation was focused on speedboats, tourist boats, fishing boats, tug boats and passenger boats, as well as fish farms – especially near the port area.
“During the operation, we also inspected 291 people, including 21 tourists and 78 documented Filipinos,” he said.
Mazre added that marine police will conduct more such operations in the future to educate the maritime community on laws pertaining to safety.
